The excavation procedure involves using heavy machinery (and on certain occasions, even dynamites) to hollow out the earth of dirt, rock, and other materials.
The first type of excavation is topsoil excavation. It only addresses the uppermost layer of the soil. Rock excavation uses heavier equipment and sometimes explosives to blast off the rock. The other two types are muck and earth excavation.
Excavation can also be classified based on the purpose. Trench, cut and fill, and basement excavation are important types along with dredging.
