Mulching Your Property - What, Why, When, and How?

Mulching is popular in Oklahoma as a simple but very effective way to better the appearance of your property. But did you know that mulching can do so much more than that? Getting a mulcher service can keep weeds at bay, in addition to keeping your plants healthy and fresh, even in the midst of the most brutal summer ever.

We asked our experts to come up with a few basics of mulching. Below, we will walk you through the when, why, and how of mulching. But before we begin:

What is Mulch?

Mulch is a pretty broad meaning term that one uses to refer to any material present on the surface of the soil. Usually, only natural materials like leaves, twigs, straw, compost, or wood chips are useful as mulch. Today, however, thanks to advancements in modern technology, synthetic products like specially formulated plastic sheets and weed mat fabrics are also becoming useful.

Keep in mind that mulch is not uniform. While some mulch may be thick and clunky, others may be finer in texture. Some mulch is temporary and dissolves into the soil pretty quickly, while other varieties may last longer. Garden mulch helps to reduce weed growth and suppresses fast evaporation rates.

Why Should You Mulch Your Property?

Mulcher service can improve the appearance and aesthetics of your land. Runoff and erosion are often serious concerns for loose soil and surface roots that remain exposed to the elements. A layer of mulch can take care of erosion. There are several other benefits as well - preserving soil moisture, insulating soil, and protecting roots, among others. The gradual decomposition of the mulch also channels organic nutrients into the soil.

When Should You Mulch Your Property?

You should apply mulch to flower beds, vegetable gardens, and yards at least twice every year. Right in the middle of the spring is when mulching is in most demand. It prepares the soil for the upcoming growing season and lends a freshly manicured look to your land.

The second round of mulching should ideally take place in the fall. The extra layer of mulch will protect your soil from the dry harshness of winter. It insulates the soil and preserves the plant roots from wilting in the cold. Since winter in Oklahoma sees snow, mulching can also act as a precautionary measure against soil erosion.

How to Mulch Your Property?

When applying mulch, make sure that the layer is around 2 to 4 inches thick. A layer thicker than 4 inches might prevent water from getting into the soil at all, while a layer thinner than 2 inches will most likely not retain moisture at all. Such thin layers are also not a good defense against excessive weed growth.

If the piece of land you are mulching has weeds, grass, and other unnecessary vegetation on it, you will probably need to take care of them before you proceed to the mulching part. Dig up the weeds and other plants and lay a weed barrier on top of the soil. Only once you are done with this step may you proceed with mulching your property. Call a professional dozer to provide you with mulcher service. If your property gets mulching by the wrong person, it can ruin your landscape beyond recovery.
