Types of Dozers Used in the Construction Industry

How often have you seen people using a dozer for construction? Bulldozers are reliable heavy machinery that helps in moving earth, debris, and objects out of the way. They are essential machines that clear areas and smoothen the ground.

What is a Bulldozer?

A bulldozer, or simply ‘dozer’ in short, is an earth-moving machine. It is designed to push rubble, debris, rock, sand, soil, etc. loose material around an area. You can easily identify a dozer for construction with its tractor-like body and the large heavy blade in front.

Originally invented as farming equipment, bulldozers have evolved to suit various industry needs. They are now indispensable in the heavy construction industry. Also, you will see dozers being used in mining, landscaping, agriculture, and even disaster management work.

Uses of a Bulldozer

A bulldozer is basically a tractor fitted with a blade in front. They are robust and huge land vehicles that have excellent grip on the ground due to the tracks they have. With the help of the blade and the tracks, a dozer for construction can push loose material of substantial quantity over the ground. This includes loose soil, sand, debris, rubble, rock, stone chips, and even other vehicles.

Note: there have been ‘dozer tanks’ in the army since WW2 which are normal tanks with a dozer blade attached in front. The purpose of these tanks is to push destroyed vehicles out of the way to clear the road for itself and others.

Types of Dozers in Construction

Constructors use a different type of dozer for construction depending upon the situation they encounter. These vary mostly depending upon their blade types.

  • Straight blade dozers: These are used for general purpose pushing work.

  • U-blade dozers: these are good for hauling and scooping work in addition to pushing.

  • Combination blade dozers: They can do petty pushing work as well as very heavy pushing work.

  • Powered tilt blade: A dozer fitted with this kind of blade can control the angle and tilt of the blade, thus changing the direction and manner of the push.

  • Mini dozer: These compact machines are great for working in urban areas where space is very limited and the work is light.

  • Wheel dozers: When you need to keep the soil intact, call in one of these. They have large wheels instead of tracks and are very useful on farms. They are very maneuverable.
