Understanding the Difference Between Retention And Detention Ponds

If you are not new in Oklahoma, you would probably have witnessed the rapid change that is taking place in this city. Areas that were once considered rural are now being modernized. From shopping malls to hospitals to restaurants to toll roads – everything is available in the areas that were far from being called a city only a few years back. In this rapid change, the importance of Oklahoma pond construction service providers has also increased by manifolds.

Since all the constructions are made of concrete, rainwater now have no place to go. This has given birth to the problem of flooding that was not natural previously in your area. However, the pond builders offer solution to this problem. Let’s see how:

Retention Ponds:

Many of you may have heard about retention ponds. If you are new to this term, retention ponds are also known as wet ponds. Oklahoma pond construction builders design the ponds in such a way that the rainwater is redirected into the designated area or pond. Builders install pipes such a way that the water flows to the pond directly without causing any puddle on the surface of your property.

If you notice the process, you will see that the pipes are installed in such slopy design that gravity plays its role in diverting the rainwater from your area. Since the process helps you retain the stormwater indefinitely in the ponds, these ponds are known as retention pond.

Detention Ponds:

Now you might be thinking if retention ponds retain water, what use do detention ponds have. Well, in case of detention ponds, the Oklahoma pond builders follow the same process of diverting stormwater into designated areas. However, unlike retention ponds, in detention ponds, you can store water temporarily.

Suppose you store water during heavy rainfall. It allows you to avoid puddle and flooding. But once the weather changes the rain stops, you may not need to store the rainwater anymore. Detention ponds allow you to release the water through the pipes located at the bottom. Apart from keeping the groundwater level stabilized, you can also use the stored water to water plants in the surrounding areas. Once you release the stored water, you need to dry the detention pond completely.

Both Ponds Working Together:

If you think that your construction site requires both retention and detention ponds, you can ask your Oklahoma pond builders such as RK&R Dozer Service to incorporate two ponds. Use them as necessary to create artificial waterbodies and to water the vegetation.
